What are quartz countertops

As we all know, the kitchen is the heart of the house, a high traffic zone. Many events happen in the kitchen from simple meals to parties, family meetings and culinary masterpieces. That’s why the kitchen is also a germ hot spot, especially the kitchen countertops. A kitchen countertop can be manufactured out of many materials like granite , quartz marble, Corian , travertine etc. In this post we’ll focus on quartz countertops.

Quartz slabs are made out of at least 90% natural- quartz crystals, mined, powdered and mixed with 8-10% resins, polymers and pigments. Sometimes the  quartz slabs can have glass or metal pieces to enhance the patterns and make the material more eye-catching.

Because the resins and polymers fill out most of the spots between quartz crystal the slabs are more durable than natural stone. Quartz countertops don’t need sealing, are non-porous, more scratch and stain resistant but not heat proof. Never place a hot pot or pan on your quartz countertops, you will destroy them!

Quartz counters will not harbor bacteria because of their non porosity although they will need to be cleaned in order to keep your home healthy.
